The visual traits of cannabis seeds is a topic that raises numerous questions amongst growers. We regularly get asked about how cannabis seeds should look, with regards to their dimensions, shape and colour, as these characteristics are believed to be strongly related to seed quality. In this post we take a detailed look at the key physical characteristics of cannabis seeds in order to clarify any concerns that you may have.

As any grower with some experience will realize, calcium deficiencies are fixed by adding calcium and magnesium, a mixture that assists in reestablishing the perfect nutritional balance of plants.

So in this case, a rise in dimensions could be a clear indicator of this addition of calcium and magnesium, which is carried out in order to remedy that macronutrient shortage during growth. This has no impact on the crop's potential for germination, growth, flowering, or yield, nor on the formation of the organoleptic properties of the buds (aroma, flavour and effect).

So we can confidently say that this difference is simply visual. If we take the case of a Moby Dick seed, its size will most probably be bigger than those of Critical +, although you can also encounter slight variations between seeds from the same strain. Don't overlook that, as with all living beings, cannabis seeds are also biologically different amongst themselves.

The structure of cannabis seeds

Cannabis seeds can also show slight changes at morphological level. It's entirely normal to find minor differences in the elliptical shape of seeds from the same batch.

In some situations their shape is more linear; whereas in others one of the ends can be rounded whilst the other is more pointy. But this is no cause for concern: as with size, these slight variations in the outline of the seeds are merely visual and have no relation to do with quality.

The color of cannabis seeds

Although it is accurate that ripe cannabis seeds typically to have a darker shell that can go from brown to black, with stripes that look like zebra stripes, this cannot be viewed as a reliable quality marker by itself.

However, a green-tinted colour is an obvious sign of underdevelopment, which means that the seed hasn't developed fully or it hasn't received all the needed resources to achieve full maturity. In this specific case, if you buy seeds with this hue you need to contact your supplier immediately and try to have them replaced.

Another factor that can be misleading is the fact that a mature, freshly-harvested cannabis seed has a brighter and darker color than after it's been stored for one to two months.
